Coming to therapy
People can see a clinical psychologist for many reasons. They might be experiencing difficulties in their life or mood that they would like support with. They might want to develop as a person, or make changes in some way. This web-site gives some information about therapy that I offer, in particular Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Cognitive Analytic Therapy.

At times, it can be helpful to have a person listen carefully, who is not involved with us in any other way than to facilitate our understanding and coping with issues facing us. In therapy we both work together to reach a shared understanding of your difficulties, and how you might move forward. Therapy often involves experiencing emotions, having these heard and recognised by the therapist and yourself. This means that sessions might be uplifting at times, challenging or painful at others, and this is normal. Working through these feelings with your therapist can enable new insights and and awareness. I am careful to review your progress and mood at regular intervals with you so that we can ensure therapy is meeting your needs and is safe.

The problems I work with in therapy include:

Relationship difficulties
Carer stress
Low self esteem
Self harm
Eating difficulties
Adjustment to physical health problems

I offer an initial psychological assessment and consultation to give you a sense of how I work and for me to assess your needs fully. If you want or need something different from what I can offer, I will do my best to locate other sources of help for you. I take self referrals and referrals from health professionals and solicitors. If appropriate, I am happy to work alongside and with other NHS and health professionals involved in your care.

What is a clinical psychologist?A clinical psychologist has the following qualities:
• 3 year training within the NHS with multiple models of therapy, across all ages, enabling individualised treatment
• Training in using different forms of assessment, including questionnaires, observation and neuropsychological tests
• doctoral level training including research methods
• chartered by the British Psychological Society
• statutorily regulated by the Health Professions Council

Like all Clinical Psychologists I work according to best practice guidelines such as those produced by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the Department of Health. My practice is governed by the Code of Conduct and Ethical Guidelines of the British Psychological Society.
